The CCM Extreme Flex 5 succeeds a previous model, the CCM Extreme Flex 4. Here's a breakdown of the progression:
This set features upgrades including an overall weight reduction, small details addressed in the leg channel, a new glove lining, upgrades to the internal core, new toe ties, and a redesign of the knee cradle. The overall responsiveness of the set has been improved, and the color zones have extended onto the outer roll.
Some of the biggest upgrades to the 5 are an all-new Molded Knee Roll designed to maximize stability in the knee area, a redesigned boot pad to work in sync with the gear's flat front face, and an added flex motion back area in the goalie glove.

CCM changed gear designers between the EFlex4 and the EFlex5, and the whole pad drastically changed. The knee rolls used to be very traditional and rounded, but on the EFlex 5, they flattened them and made them angular. With this pad, CCM tried to break away from tradition and reinvent the wheel in some areas, but it fell a little flat. Overall, they're very light with great rebound control but have a knee roll design that makes goalies want to look the other way.
